tahoe facts and issues

Saving the lake will require the effort of thousands of people. The League strives to educate Tahoe residents and visitors about the environmental problems facing Lake Tahoe and engage those interested in joining the efforts to “Keep Tahoe Blue.”  In addition to providing the detailed facts and issues information on these pages, we offer opportunities for activists to get involved in issues affecting Lake Tahoe throughout the year.  Click here to get involved!

Want to know more about beautiful Lake Tahoe? Interested in the unique history of the lake? How about how Lake Tahoe was formed or why it is losing it's clarity? The navigation links above will give you all the detailed information about what makes Lake Tahoe such a special place.

Tahoe at a Glance

  1. The lake was known only to the Washoe Native American tribe until it was “discovered” by General John C. Fremont in 1844.
  2. Between 1870 and 1900, the forests of the basin were heavily logged for use in mine shafts at the Comstock Silver Lode.  Today the forest is only approximately 5 percent old-growth.
  3. The growth of algae has increased about three-fold since measurements were first taken in the late 1950’s.  The lake is losing an average of over one foot of clarity each year.
