Removing decades-old telecom cables from Lake Tahoe

About the ongoing project

In September of 2024, AT&T announced they would resume work to remove two underwater lead-sheathed telecommunication cables from Lake Tahoe. AT&T has committed to work in coordination with the League to Save Lake Tahoe (Keep Tahoe Blue) to remove the cables safely and quickly, following the resolution of a 2021 lawsuit with the California Sportfishing Protection Alliance. The cable removal operation is now underway.

This is excellent news for Lake Tahoe. The League’s shared goal with AT&T is to remove the cables by the end of November 2024. If weather stands in the way, the job will be completed as early as possible in 2025.

This is a moment worth sharing, but it is not the finish line. The League will remain closely involved every step of the way, just as we have since learning about the cables, to ensure they are removed safely and quickly.

The goal is to remove the cables safely and quickly.
You can help the operation go smoothly by steering clear of the project site and letting the crew focus on their important work.
Thank you.
