Cable Removal: The Project's Successful Conclusion |
| |
Eight miles of lead-sheathed cables have finally been removed from below Lake Tahoe's pristine waters. The cable removal took careful planning – from securing numerous permits and conducting biological surveys, to coordinating logistics with agencies, contractors, and partners. The focused efforts helped the expected month-long process to finish in almost half the time.
The League is proud to have played an instrumental role in this collaborative success by acting as environmental watchdog, project facilitator, and partner to AT&T in the removal process. We are very grateful to AT&T, local organizations, and the community who came together to protect the Lake. We continue to remain vigilant as the Lake's watchdog. |

Village at Palisades Tahoe Project Update: The Fight Continues |

Earlier this week, the League joined Sierra Watch in filing a lawsuit challenging the recent approval of the Village at Palisades Tahoe Project by the Placer County Board of Supervisors. The League worked collaboratively with Alterra and Placer County for a decade to find a solution that would modernize Olympic Valley without negatively impacting Tahoe. But Alterra wasn’t willing to acknowledge or mitigate its impacts to the Lake. Here's why we're taking a stand:
- Harm to Tahoe’s air and water: Thousands of new car trips would increase tailpipe emissions, road erosion, and runoff that pollute Tahoe’s air and water.
-
Environmental impacts ignored: Despite over a decade of our advocacy, thousands of letters and comments from the concerned public, rejection by local community groups, and a 2021 legal ruling against the plan,, the project still fails to acknowledge, prevent, or offset its significant environmental impacts to Tahoe.
The League is taking legal action as a last resort to protect Lake Tahoe. We have proposed project alternatives to Alterra, yet our suggestions were dismissed. We are not against development. The League can support modernization in Olympic Valley that respects and preserves the Lake. We remain open to working with Alterra and Placer County to find a productive, beneficial solution.

With the winter season upon us, it's time to consider how we can enjoy Tahoe while reducing our footprint. Alternative transportation options like microtransit shuttles, public buses, and carpooling are easy and effective ways to get around while minimizing the pollution that threatens our beautiful Lake.
Learn more about the sustainable winter transportation solutions available in Tahoe, and join us in helping Keep Tahoe Blue and the air clean during our favorite snowy season. |

California's voters have spoken, and Prop 4 has passed – bringing significant funding to improve forest health, reduce wildfire risk, and help Keep Tahoe Blue!
The League is proud to have thrown our support behind this ballot measure that allocates critical resources to the Lake Tahoe Basin to tackle wildland fuel management, safeguard wildlife habitat, and restore sensitive ecosystems. Thank you to everyone who supported this important measure – it's a big step forward for Tahoe's future.

We've achieved significant milestones in 2024, but Tahoe's threats aren't ending with the calendar year. Every dollar raised in December goes directly to the effort to Keep Tahoe Blue. With your support, we can ensure Tahoe is protected for generations to come. Please donate today to help us prepare for the work to come in 2025. We need to raise $750,000 by December 31 to be ready for anything that comes. Can we count on you to be part of the solution? |
