Sledding Fun Without The Mess |
|
|
Spooner Sled Hill, a beloved winter destination, sees a lot of action when there is snow on the ground. In the past, that attention left behind more than just sled tracks. So, the League launched a litter-prevention pilot project that morphed into a partnership with the Nevada Department of Transportation, the USDA Forest Service, the Clean Tahoe Program, and Take Care Tahoe to place dumpsters and restrooms on-site during the snowy season.
The results? A 94% reduction in litter compared to winters past! These changes show that outdoor fun-seekers are ready and willing to leave no trace. The success story is also a testament to what's possible when we work together to protect Lake Tahoe. Heading out for winter fun? Remember to pack out all your trash and leave no trace. |

You deserve a break; let someone else do the driving this winter. Choosing lake-friendly transportation gives you the chance to enjoy the ride while reducing tailpipe emissions, erosion, and runoff, which all helps protect Tahoe. Pollution caused by traffic is in fact a top threat to Lake Tahoe's wondrous water clarity. Here are our pro tips for getting around this winter, while sparing the Lake. 🚎 Lake-Friendly Travel Options: -
Microtransit Apps: Book on-demand rides directly to your destination.
-
Local Shuttle Services: Check schedules for extended winter hours.
- Rideshare with Friends: Split costs and cut emissions.
- Public Buses: Budget-friendly and eco-conscious.
-
Park & Ride: Drive part-way, then switch to transit for the last leg.
Plan ahead to maximize your ease, minimize the hassle, and protect the Lake, all in one trip. |

Looking Back at 2024: Protecting Tahoe Together |
|
|
2024 was a year of milestones for Lake Tahoe’s future, and your support helped make it all possible. Thank you to all who contributed to our mission with your dollars, time, and energy. -
Beaches free of litter and plastic: The League launched Blue Beaches, a new program that reduced litter by an incredible 97% at Zephyr Cove and Shoals.
-
Tahoe’s waters protected from lead cables: Eight miles of lead-sheathed cables were successfully removed from the Lake through a collaborative plan the League carried out with AT&T.
-
Paving the way for a plastic-free Tahoe: South Lake Tahoe made history as the first municipality in the nation to ban single-use plastic water bottles. This landmark decision will reduce plastic waste on beaches and microplastics in Tahoe’s waters.
Together, we’re ensuring this special place remains beautiful and healthy for generations to come. |

Earlier this week, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) approved amendments to Homewood Resort’s 2011 Master Plan. Ever since changes at Homewood were first discussed in 2022, the League and many others have asked questions and become involved. The community group Keep Homewood Public has been the driving force in the conversation about the future of the resort and the West Shore.
As part of our mission, the League engages with development proposals to ensure the Lake’s environment is protected and Tahoe’s planning process is accountable to the public. It’s just as important that enforcement mechanisms are in place to backstop all approved plans. In its decision on Homewood, TRPA delivered those three needs, and we commend them for it. You can read the League’s formal comments on the project and process here. |

Partnerships That Drive Change |
|
|
Collaboration is at the heart of making a difference for Lake Tahoe. By teaming up with partners throughout the Tahoe Basin, the League is championing sustainable winter travel and litter solutions. From reducing traffic and pollution with expanded car-free travel options to tackling litter in popular recreation spots, these collaborations are making a tangible impact. Together, we're showing that community-driven solutions can protect and conserve the Lake for future generations.
